Nubra Valley
Relatively warmer region in Ladakh, fruits and better
crops grow in Nubra making it 'Ldumra' or 'the orchard' of Ladakh.
Beautiful to the core, early summer is a season of wild pink and yellow
roses in the Nubra Valley while lavender is the color of the Nubra
environs in August. Diskit, the largest village here is known for its
apricots along with the Diskit Gompa, which is more than 350 years old,
perhaps the oldest and largest monastery of the valley. The beautiful
sand dunes of Hunder village ave an ethereal beauty that is further
enhanced with the excitement of a possibility of spotting the
double-humped camels that are found here. The Gompa of the village is
the best site for watching the gorgeous sunset and is noteworthy for its
old frescoes and Buddha's statue.
Since the Nubra valley is an Indian land sandwiched between China and
Pakistan, few people had ventured to go there until the Indian
government tempted the adventurers to have a glimpse of the rich green
lands between Karakorams and Himalayas in the villages of the valley by
constructing a road to Leh. This part of Ladakh is very close to the
strategic point of Siachen glacier with a view of the national interest.
It is the world's largest and most closely guarded glacier but it is
prohibited to visit it. The trekking to Nubra Valley from Leh is full of
beautiful sights full of 4,600 - 4,800 m high rocks, alpine flora such
as mosses and wild mint, barren mountains covered with ice and passing
through Khardong La, the highest mountain pass in the world.
